WHAT IS A SHEEPADOODLE?

Picture
A Sheepadoodle is a crossbreed between an Old English Sheepdog and a Poodle.   They are known for being intelligent, loving, energetic and a wonderful family dog.  They love to play and are great with children.  They don't bark often and are very good natured.  Sheepadoodles are hypo-allergenic and do not shed.  You can find them in three sizes: standard size is 65-85 lbs, small standard is under 65 lbs, and the mini is under 55 lbs.
For a more comprehensive look at a crossbred dog we need to look at the characteristics of both breeds.

Old English Sheepdog (OES)

Old English Sheepdogs are known for being playful, fun and for their romping gallop.  They are smart, adaptable and good natured. They can be great watch dogs, but are not aggressive enough to be a guard dog.  OES were previously bred to be herding dogs, although some dogs' herding instincts remain stronger than others.  This means they may herd children by circling or nipping them.  This can be tamed with socialization and training.  They are about 80% hypoallergenic and do shed less than average dogs.  OES are not fastidious house pets, so they will bring in all kinds of branches and dirt inside on their long coats.  They need daily grooming and occasional baths to keep their coats clean.

Standard Poodle

Poodles are generally very intelligent and easy to train.  They are intuitive and sensitive to their owner's moods.  Poodles were bred to be hunting and water dogs, so this makes them very observant of their surrounding environment.  This also means that they can get bored if they are left alone too long and aren't stimulated.  Poodles are stereotyped for being high strung and this can be characteristic of some poodle lines, but if they are socialized properly around other pets and people they should not have this issue.  Poodles are also stereotyped for being sissy dogs, but actually they are very athletic and agile.   They do well when exercised daily.  Poodles are hypoallergenic and low shedding.  If their coat is pretty short they only need to be groomed once or twice a week to keep knots and mats at bay.

Your Sheepadoodle

Your Sheepadoodle will be a unique individual mix of these two breeds.  It will possess more or less of these qualities and some of its very own personality traits.  Just like people, Sheepadoodles contain some of their parents' qualities while displaying them in their own unique way.
